At first you assume you lost some pressure on the road, until you came to a stop and noticed your tire is flat. Somewhere out there you had run over a patch of nails and one of them had punctured your tire.

A flat tire is really the “worst case scenario” when you see the TPMS light flick on. In most situations you simply need to stop at a local gas station and fill up on air.

But how important to have properly-inflated tires? If you don’t have a flat, what’s the trouble?

An improperly inflated tire has all kinds of consequences for your vehicle: It can cause uneven tread (which wears your tire out faster), reduce your fuel efficiency (which means you spend more money on gas), and cause you to hydroplane (which could result in a serious accident).

The TPMS dashboard warning light can save you before ending up on the side of the road with a flat. But don’t assume your tires are fine just because the TPMS hasn’t been triggered yet. Usually it goes off when your tire pressure is dangerously low — possibly too late to bear the weight of your vehicle.

Instead, put a reminder in your phone to have you check your tire pressure with a gauge once a month, and always check your tire pressure before heading out on a road trip. The actual manufacturer’s recommended tire pressure levels can be found on a sticker on the inside of the driver’s door jam on your vehicle. Or, you can take a peek in your owner’s manual to figure out what the pressure should be for your tires. A little low? Simply stop by a local gas station to refill your tires to the right pressure.
